Schermerhorn Wedding, Nashville TN: Alexa and Adam
Posted on October 7th, 2013 by Kelly Cummings in Weddings
I’d been looking forward to Alexa and Adam’s wedding for months. I’d been craving a wedding in Nashville, a city I have an inexplicable addiction to, and I can’t imagine a more perfect introduction to weddings in Music City. Alexa and Adam were married at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, and it was an absolutely perfect setting for a Canadian meets Texan in Nashville wedding. Alexa is well on her way to becoming a Southern Belle, and Steel Magnolias might have inspired the color palette and groom’s cake just a little bit. I loved so many things about this wedding, from the crowns on the invitations and cake to reference the couple’s new last name (King), a surprise children’s choir performance of “Oh Happy Day” after the first kiss that the Alexa’s mom arranged, the chance to work with my friend, planner Kelly Dellinger, the band Nationwide Coverage (who are from Alabama, y’all!), all the adorable flower girls, and definitely the sweet moments throughout the day that really show how deep Alexa’s and Adam’s love for one another is. You can read more about their love story in Alexa’s responses below, but also check out the wonderful story that Alexa’s makeup artist, Miss Tennessee, Brenna Mader, wrote about Alexa’s battle (and win!) over breast cancer on her blog. Thank you to my talented friend Brittany Arias for assisting and to Alexa and Adam for letting me be a part of this joyous event!!

Q&A with the bride, Alexa!
-How did the two of you meet and when did you know this was it?!
We met at work when we were both interns, which is the worst year of medical training. He had to do a month in the children’s hospital and we just happened to be paired on the same service. Anyone who still finds you attractive after a 30 hour shift is a keeper! We were friends for about 9 months before we started dating, although I think we both knew we were going to marry each other before our first date!
-Tell me about the day: The feel of it, the colors/theme, special details.
We wanted the day to feel soft, romantic, and beautiful. We also wanted a traditional, formal wedding because anything else in that gorgeous venue would have just felt wrong! Our colors were blush, peach, and gray and we had lots of mercury glass, candles, and eucalyptus garlands. We tried to include special details everywhere! We used an antique doctor’s bag on the card table that my best friend gave me when I graduated from residency. When guests first arrived, they were offered pink tea or lemonade since it was a warm day. Adam and I wrote notes about what made our bridal party special to us and put them out on the chairs at the ceremony instead of programs. I had 4 very cute and lovely flower girls because I remember when I was little I always wanted to be one – the more the merrier!
-What was most important to you when you were wedding planning?
The most important was the venue, which was also the biggest splurge. We wanted everything to happen in one place so that the flow of the event would continue to build and to make things easy on our guests, most of whom were traveling from out of the state or country.
-What do you remember most about the day/what are your favorite memories from the day? Did anything surprise you?
What I remember most is how beautiful everyone looked. Our families and bridal party looked so happy and radiant. Adam was so handsome and excited. The biggest surprise was definitely the children’s choir! As a surprise, my mother organized a children’s choir to sing “Oh Happy Day” after our first kiss – I felt like we were living in a movie. It was incredible. And at the end of the night we were sent off with our guests shaking pink and silver tambourines (my go-to dance move is the “air-tambourine”). Both very personal and memorable surprises.
-What advice would you give other brides now that you’re official?
Decide what is most important to how you want your wedding to look and feel, and splurge on those (for me it was the venue and flowers). Have some fun and make it personal – even if that involves a red velvet armadillo cake 🙂
